(see more info and history of acupuncture on FAQ page) Acupuncture is one of five complementary branches of Chinese Medicine. The other four include, Herbal Therapy, Food Therapy, Tui-Na, and Qi-Gong. Acupuncture is the art of stimulating acupoints by placing tiny needles into very specific locations within the meridians in the body. The goal is to treat existing conditions and balance and harmonize the body systems in order to optimize health and performance of an individual. This method is effective whether the patient is an elite athlete, performance or show horse, breeding, trail, pleasure horse or pasture pal! There are several ways to stimulate the points including the use of dry needles, aquapuncture (often an injection of vitamin B12), moxabustion ( burning an herb over specific points), electrical stimulation( a very light impulse is used) and laser stimulation. Acupuncture, herbal therapy and massage therapy are often used to smooth out muscle soreness developed during training and ease the rigors of competition. Chinese herbs are also used under the same principle as acupuncture in terms of treating disease conditions, relieving pain and discomfort, and harmonizing the body systems. They are particularly useful in horse who are needle shy! |
